There are two main varieties of 1887 Double Florin with this type featuring the Arabic-type date on the reverse with a number '1' used, rather than the Roman 'I' that can also be found on some 1887 Double Florins. This was the first year in which this controvercial denomination was issued with 483,347 coins with this date struck at the Royal Mint. Like every issue in this series, the 1887 Double Florin features the Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm.
