Veilguard is an epic piece of business, having you range across the North of Thedas, from the bleak wilds of Anderfel to the dramatic coast of Rivain. Veterans of the series will be rewarded with the chance to explore locations they'd previously only seen hinted at in journals as far back as a decade and a half ago as they attempt to halt the rise of an ancient evil. BioWare doesn't make the typical move of chucking you into an open world and letting you have at it - rather, the levels are focused, beautiful, and just big enough to give you enough to explore without giving up the attention to detail that comes with tighter design. Combat will feel familiar to players of more recent BioWare games - it's fast, fluid and action-packed. As with Mass Effect, however, you can pause a fight to deliver instructions to members of your party, leaving plenty of options on the table for more strategically-minded players. Speaking of your party, a big part of Veilguard's appeal is the friends you make along the way. They each have their own skills and progression and, more importantly, their own story. Fetch X for character Y side quests are out in Veilguard, and instead they're replaced by meaty character arcs and quests for your party, each of whom has plenty of their own stuff going on. If you're a completionist, you'll find around 100 hours of game to conquer, and there's very little filler in there.
