After signing to develop for Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 2 console, Koei have thrusted their development teams even further into the realm of advanced technology and realism with the production of Kessen, a far Eastern story of war of epic proportions. Labelled as one of the first DVD format games for the new console, Kessen promised to be one of the most technologically advanced games released for the new millennium. With its European release due, it's time to see how much Koei have learnt from their development time. The introduction of the game gives the gamers the impression that an epic story is about to engulf them, and in some ways, it is. However, Kessen comes strictly under the genre of real-time strategy, which isn't such a common asset within the console industry. Consisting of many battles, the real-time clock present throughout the game's entirety gives players a sense of pressure and urgency. There are many variables to consider when playing Kessen, since you must issue every command or instruction as the leader of the army. Once moves have been made, the power of the PlayStation 2 is put to the test, with the camera zooming in to give gamers a slice of the action. There can be as many as 100 3D characters on screen simultaneously, setting a good example of what both the machine and the developers are capable of.
