Fast, functional and far less than you might think; that is the best way to describe the Scott Contessa 30 mountain bike. There are plenty of alternatives for women who want to head off road and tear up the turf but this is definitely one to keep in mind if you want one of the best cycles that this affordable range has amongst its ranks. The custom arrangement of the frame geometry means that females will be able to enjoy a deftly handled ride across any surface and premium components from major brands should seal the deal. Scott’s own alloy frame is home to a number of key features of the Contessa 30. Hydraulically operated brakes from the Tektro Draco range work in unison with the Shimano gears and Suntour front fork suspension to keep the ride level and the handling precise, whether you are rolling along a paved surface or flying downhill on the way to the finish line. Although this is by no means the most capable or costly women’s mountain bike on the market, it might be best placed to entice new riders to take a walk on the wild side. The frame of the Scott Contessa 30 is decorated with autumnal reds, oranges and browns for the 2011 season, which makes it stand out from the Day-Glo primary colours, usually a feature on this type of mountain bike. This might either be a breath of fresh air or an off-putting deficiency, depending on your opinion, but for those neutral to the impact of a bike’s colour it should be quiet enough to let you enjoy your riding without upsetting anyone else’s aesthetic sensibilities.
