Item Description

Issued in the year 2000, this Half Sovereign is among the first Elizabeth II uncirculated fractional Sovereigns issued by The Royal Mint. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced to British coinage in 1998, replacing Raphael Maklouf’s effigy. The Rank-Broadley profile shows Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara that once belonged to Queen Mary. The royal obverse is paired with a historic reverse showing England’s patron saint in the act of slaying a dragon. Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George is mounted on horseback and has become closely associated with these coins. It was designed in 1817 for the first Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns and has seen extensive use on these gold coins. The date appears below the dragon. The specifications of these Half Sovereigns were also established in 1817: 3.99 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold and a diameter of 19.30 millimetres. Their precious metal content means that Half Sovereigns are VAT free and their face value (technically £1 / One Pound) gives them the benefit of a Capital Gains Tax exemption in the UK.
