Physical & Functional Overview • The Console: A compact, slate-grey box featuring a top-loading, flip-up CD disc tray, a power button, an open button, and a hardware reset button. • Media Drive: Built around a 2x-speed CD-ROM drive capable of reading up to 650 MB of data, which allowed for complex 3D environments, expansive audio tracks, and cinematic full-motion video (FMV) sequences. Internal Architecture • Central Processing Unit (CPU): Powered by a 32-bit MIPS R3000A-compatible RISC processor operating at 33.86 MHz. • Graphics & Video: Utilised a dedicated Geometry Transfer Engine (GTE) to render real-time 3D polygon graphics, handling up to 360,000 polygons per second, alongside traditional 2D sprite generation. • System Memory: Equipped with 2 MB of main RAM and an additional 1 MB of dedicated video RAM (VRAM). • Audio Engine: Featured a 24-channel audio processing unit (SPU) supporting CD-quality sound, MIDI sequencing, and digital acoustic effects. • The PSone: Released in 2000, this smaller, curved, pure-white redesign significantly reduced the console's footprint and could be paired with an official attachable LCD screen for portable play. Comes with 12 months warranty.
